How to Identify your Starter |
 |
Most Volvo Penta, Mercruiser and OMC inboards use a
GM/Chevy based engine, (although there is the odd Ford around)
because of this they use fairly common starters, however, there are still a
few options, the main ones are -
does it have a staggered or parallel mounting bolt pattern?,
is it the early 'fat body' type which was fitted up to around 1990, or
is it the later PMGR type, or even the short solenoid nose casting type fitted
to later 3.0 litre (4 cyl) engines from about 1996/7 onwards.
Here are some images of the more common types of starter.
PS just to throw in some more confusion, some of the engine blocks have all
three tapped holes and so will take either type of starter, and the later PMGR
starters will fit the earlier 'Fat Body types'

fat body
This Is the early fat body type fitted to 2.5 litre (120hp), 3.0 litre (140hp) V6 (175, 185 & 205 hp) and V8 (both small and big block) Many different horsepower groups up until around 1989/90
This starter can be substituted for the later PMGR types but it is our opinion that although these starters draw more current they are a much Beefier item than the later types.

Staggered PMGR
This is the later PMGR (Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction) type starter as fitted to most engines after about 1990, the most common one is the 1.4 KW model which will turn most engines including V8's however we do keep a 1.7 KW heavy duty version which is preferable for the larger V8's and big blocks, this is shown here in staggered bolt pattern

Parallel PMGR
This is the PMGR Starter but with parallel bolt pattern,

Serial Numbers are always a help when Identifying starters,
however we have come across engines where the serial number says it should be
fitted with a Staggered bolt type and it was actually fitted with a parallel type
so it is always worth checking before you order |
